Oxygen Isotopes from Massive Stars

چکیده

We investigate the yields of the three stable oxygen isotopes 16;17;18 O and their dependence on weakly constrained physical ingredients in pre-supernova models. We show that the 16 O yield is sensitive to assumptions on convection used in evolutionary models for massive stars. In addition to that, stellar wind mass loss aaects the 16 O yield of Galactic stars initially more massive than 30 M. We show that the production factor of 17 O in massive stars is strongly increasing with metallicity, contrary to the expectation of a constant production factor for secondary isotopes. The 18 O yield is extremely sensitive to the treatment of convection in regions of varying mean molecular weight in the stellar interior. The Galactic distribution of all three oxygen isotopes has a large diagnostic potential for chemical evolution models, but also for uncertain stellar physics as mass loss and convection.

Implications of low-energy fusion hindrance on stellar burning and nucleosynthesis

We investigate the consequences of a new phenomenological model prediction of strongly reduced low-energy astrophysical S-factors for carbon and oxygen fusion reactions on stellar burning and nucleosynthesis. The new model drastically reduces the reaction rates in stellar matter at temperatures T < ∼ (3–10) × 108 K, especially at densities ρ >∼ 109 g cm−3, in a strongly screened or even pycnonu...

The winds of the hot massive first stars

We study dynamical aspects of circumstellar environment around massive zero-metallicity first stars. For this purpose we apply our NLTE wind models. We show that the hydrogen-helium stellar wind from stationary massive first generation (Population III) stars (driven either by the line (bound-bound) or continuum (bound-free and free-free) transitions) is unlikely. The possibility of expulsion of...

Presupernova Evolution of Rotating Massive Stars II: Evolution of the Surface Properties

We investigate the evolution of the surface properties of models for rotating massive stars, i.e., their luminosities, effective temperatures, surface rotational velocities, and surface abundances of all isotopes, from the zero age main sequence to the supernova stage. Our results are based on the grid of stellar models by Heger et al. (2000), which covers solar metallicity stars in the initial...

The Isotopic Abundances of Magnesium in Stars

Isotopic abundance ratios Mg:Mg:Mg are derived for 20 stars from highresolution spectra of the MgH A-X 0-0 band at 5140Å. With the exception of the weak G-band giant HR 1299, the stars are dwarfs that sample the metallicity range -1.8 < [Fe/H] <0.0. The abundance of Mg and Mg relative to the dominant isotope Mg decreases with decreasing [Fe/H] in fair accord with predictions from a recent model...

Massive Star Evolution: Nucleosynthesis and Nuclear Reaction Rate Uncertainties

We present a nucleosynthesis calculation of a 25 M star of solar composition that includes all relevant isotopes up to polonium. In particular, all stable isotopes and necessary nuclear reaction rates are covered. We follow the stellar evolution from hydrogen burning till iron core collapse and simulate the explosion using a “piston” approach. We discuss the influence of two key nuclear reactio...
